Are you curious about how meaning reconstruction works in actual practice?  Do you have questions about how to approach grief therapy with a challenging case of your own?  Have you encountered obstacles in moving forward with your client, or uncertainties about what issues to address first in a complex circumstance of tragic loss?  Join us for this Case Consultation module to delve deeply into the realities of working with difficult cases of individuals or families confronting loss, addressing questions of your own about clients you serve, while also learning from the experiences and cases of a small group of fellow clinicians in the PI community.

In this 3-hour module, we will:

  • identify a flexible set of strategies and techniques tailored to the client’s unique needs;

  • engage in optional spontaneous live demonstrations of possible interventions with volunteers enacting the clients about whom they would like to consult;

  • work in small groups of creative clinicians under guidance of PI faculty to conceptualize appropriate alternatives for intervention;

  • troubleshoot well-intended therapeutic procedures that met with an impasse or client resistance;

  • address your distinctive ethical and clinical conundrums arising in your unique context of practice; and

  • recommend relevant additional training modules or readings to deepen your skills relevant to the population or client with whom you are working.

In short, this module offers tailored consultation on clinical issues arising in the therapeutic work of learners who serve grieving individuals, couples, families or groups.  While not intended to constitute formal supervision of your practice, it offers focused, responsive consultation and training in grief therapy as meaning reconstruction, integrating, extending and problem-solving the application of skills developed in other parts of the PI curriculum.  Come with specific questions, but with no need to give a comprehensive case presentation, and contribute your own observations and insights regarding the cases of fellow professionals in the PI community.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Utilize the Tripartite Model of Meaning Reconstruction for case conceptualization, identifying a clinical target, and selecting appropriate techniques to address that goal;

  • Formulate specific questions arising from your practice with challenging clients and receive responsive consultation on possible approaches to addressing them;

  • Collaborate with a small group of colleagues to brainstorm alternative interventions applicable to an actual case put forward by a member of the group; and

  • Identify principles for resolving ethical and clinical issues arising in your distinctive context of practice.

Note:  Attendance of the live online training session confers credit of 1 Practicum Session required for Certification in Grief Therapy as Meaning Reconstruction or Certification in Family-Focused Grief Therapy.
